Innisfail Flying Club
Fly-in breakfast at an excellent little airport

June 10, 2007

On Sunday June 10, the Innisfail Flying Club hosted a fly-in breakfast. Itching for an excuse to fly, I jumped at the chance to get out and visit another airport.

Weather for that weekend was hit and miss, with large rain showers developing throughout the day. Naturally I checked the weather before going to bed, and again when I awoke. Conditions called for high scattered clouds, but an otherwise acceptable flying day.

Going GPS-direct wasn't a suitable course, as it took us near the Olds/Didsbury airport and right over the Boden penitentiary, so I diverted around these and took the opportunity for some sight-seeing around one of my brother's construction projects.

As we arrived aver Innisfail I was surprised to see such a nice airport. For years I'd avoided the airport because of the heavy glider traffic, but here was a typical RCAF-style triangle with runway 16-34 still well maintained. I didn't find any obstructions in the circuit, but the home owner on short final must 'experience' each northbound departure.

Breakfast consisted of the usual fare of pancakes, bacon and eggs. I enjoyed it, and noted plenty of seats available in one of the t-hangars.

There were probably about 30 to 40 airplanes around the airport, and I took an hour to look at several of them in depth. Some I recognized from the Calgary area, but a number had made the trip down from Lacombe. The gliding club had their gliders on display, and the local parachutists performed demonstration drops.

Part way through my wanderings, the sun broke out and really warmed things up. The clouds dispersed and we were able to watch the Cessna 206 jump ship climbing up to about 10,000 feet.

We left after the first rush of departures, at about 11am.

I'd like to commend the Innisfail Flying Club for putting on an enjoyable breakfast. I'll certainly return to Innisfail as a destination, and for their next breakfast. Just remember to check the NOTAMs for gliding and parachuting activity.
